Best Natural Supplements, Vitamins, and Minerals to boost the immune system and help protect against COVID-19 coronavirus

Vitamins and Minerals

To help protect against COVID-19 coronavirus, Dr. Kristen Coles, ND of Steelsmith Natural Health Center in Honolulu recently suggested taking the following vitamins and supplements daily:

  • 1000 mg of vitamin C
  • 2000-5000 IU of vitamin D
  • 15 mg of Zinc
  • 1 teaspoon of Elderberry syrup
  • 500 mg of Resveratrol
  • Medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi, Coriolus, Shitake, Chaga, and Lion’s Mane

As Dr. Kristen Coles, ND suggested, people (especially the elderly and those with weak immune systems) should take 1000mg Vitamin C per day to build up their immune system and protect from COVID-19 coronavirus.

I personally prefer taking Vitamin C by mouth at at least 1000 mg per day in divided doses or a single dose of liposomal Vitamin C. Ideally, Vitamin C should be non-GMO, since GMO derived vitamin C does exist.

Food sources highest in vitamin C include acerola cherries, guavas, amla, and yellow peppers. Kiwi, strawberries, oranges, and papayas provide a good amount too.

For Vitamin D I prefer to get it from the good old Hawaiian sun, since our body produces this miracle vitamin after sun exposure. But when that’s not enough it can be found in wild salmon, which is one of the highest food sources of vitamin D. When that’s not available, I take good quality vitamin D supplements.

Zinc is super important in this age when vegetarian and vegan diets are promoted by the mainstream culture because Zinc is mostly found in animal foods. Highest sources of zinc in food are (from high to low): oysters, beef, chicken leg, firm tofu, pumpkin seeds, and hemp seeds. For supplements I prefer raw zinc.

I personally love mushrooms and regularly take medicinal mushrooms to strengthen my immune system. I really like Paul Stamets’s line of medicinal mushrooms. Reishi, Coriolus (Turkey Tail), Chaga, and Lion’s Mane are almost always stocked in our health shelf at home.

Resveratrol is found in abundance in red wine, dark chocolate, and berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and bilberries. It’s also available as a quality supplement if berries, dark chocolate or wine is not an option.

Elderberry syrup is also known as sambacus. It’s available as an organic extract and we often give it to our 1 year-old if there are signs of sickness and take it ourselves to boost our own immune defenses.

High Dose Intravenous (IV) Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential. Human body cannot produce Vitamin C, therefore we must get if from food and/or supplements. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and immune-building vitamin. It can be taken orally or intravenously.

In fact, high dose intravenous vitamin C therapy is already an official treatment against COVID-19 adopted in China and Korea.

High dose intravenous vitamin C is a therapy that’s also available in the United States, including Hawaii. However, probably and unfortunately not from a regular hospital.

Intravenous Vitamin C is administered through a qualified health practitioner such as a naturopathic doctor (ND) at their clinic in doses ranging from 12g-24g per session. The benefit is direct and immediate absorption of this crucial vitamin.

Colloidal silver

All viruses and pathogens have a weak spot.

According to Dr. Gordon Pedersen PhD, ND as well as books written on the subject, nano sized silver particles (colloidal silver) have the ability to block viruses from attaching to human cells.

Viruses require a biological host to live and reproduce. They do this by attaching to a living cell such as that of a human and inject their viral DNA or RNA into it.

Reducing Stress and Anxiety

Stress, fear, and anxiety damage our immune system. Clearly, we live in a high stress world already. Add to that the sensationalist, fear-mongering mainstream news media, that exploits people’s psychology creating a world of endless anxiety.

Plus the extreme financial hardships created by government-mandated orders to stay and work from home in light of COVID-19 and you have a perfect recipe for stress-created immune system disaster.

Andrew Goliszek Ph.D. of Psychology Today confirms: “Ongoing stress makes us susceptible to illness and disease because the brain sends defense signals to the endocrine system, which then releases an array of hormones that not only gets us ready for emergency situations but severely depresses our immunity at the same time.” (emphasis added).

Methods to reduce stress and anxiety include:

  • Reducing time spent watching TV especially news, violence/horror/drama shows, and social media
  • Reducing negative thinking and negative outlook. Thinking more positive and optimistic instead, even under extreme stress situations.
  • Taking at least 5 deep, long breaths to instantly activate parasympathetic nervous system and relax. Shallow breathing promotes stress and vice-versa.
  • Meditation, prayer, and mindfulness techniques.
  • Light to moderate exercise. Walking or light running is great. High intensity exercise promotes too much physical stress and depletes the adrenal glands.
  • Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Spending time in nature as much as possible.
  • Spending quality time with family and embracing (off-line) social connections.
  • Having fun and learning new things.
  • Greatly reducing sugar, stimulants i.e. caffeine and junk food.
  • Eating more fresh, wholesome, nutritions, and organic meals.
  • Not skipping meals.
  • Reducing EMFs and screen time (including cell phone, computer, TV, iPad, etc.)
  • Adaptogens: natural nutritional supplements and herbs to strengthen the adrenal glands and calm the nerves.

Reducing Electro Magnetic Frequencies (EMFs)

EMFs are invisible, but harmful frequencies produced by modern electronic devices. Biggest offenders include: cellphone towers, cell phones, WI-FI routers, microwave ovens, dirty electricity, ungrounded electrical wires, wireless tech, electrical substations, and 5G.

As a matter of fact, COVID-19 origin in Wuhan coincided with the completion of Wuhan’s 5G grid comprised of thousands of 5G towers. 5G is a very intense and dangerous microwave EMF.

Heat, Sauna, Humidity, and UV

Coronaviruses prefer cold, dry weather and become inactive when ambient temperatures reach 56°C after 25-30 minutes of exposure.

Airborne coronaviruses can travel further in dry, less humid environments. Humidity is not their friend, as tiny water droplets of humid air reduce their travel distance and ultimately make them drop to the ground.


Having that said, the first thing that comes to mind is going to the sauna, where ambient temperatures easily reach 80°C (176 Fahrenheit).

To be clear, sauna use alone will not “cure” an infected person from COVID-19. However, regular sauna use has been shown to improve immune system function as well as increase the human growth hormone in healthy individuals.

Sauna is not for everyone, so check with your doctor before using it, especially people with blood pressure or any other chronic health conditions.

But even healthy people have to follow established sauna safety rules such as timing intervals, cooling off periods, and not being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while using the sauna.

If sauna is not right for you, then drinking hot liquids like soups, tea, or coffee could prove beneficial and a pleasant experience. Just be careful and don’t burn yourself please.

This is also consistent with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach of balancing ying and yang forces. Winter and Spring seasons are on the colder/cooler side so we should be enjoying warming food and drinks to balance.

Ultraviolet Light (UV)

Therefore, it may be prudent to get out into the Sun to get some good old sunshine therapy. This will also stimulate your body’s natural vitamin D production, which is crucial for a healthy immune system. Just be careful not to sunburn yourself.

Fresh air
